Masked star wows the San Francisco crowd at Stern Grove

By the time Orville Peck played his third song at Stern Grove, the theatrical country singer’s silver-studded jacket was off. After he had blazed through “Big Sky” and “Turn to Hate,” the audience cheered Peck’s show of skin as the last arrivals filled the grove, the retaining walls and stones on the hill opposite center stage and spilled out into the adjacent meadow. The fog rolled in and out in cycles, cooling off both the audience and the headliner, who played the rest of the show in a black wife pleaser and his signature mask-hat combo. It was a good day for Wrangler jeans, cowboy hats and embroidered shirts. And there was fringe everywhere.

“This is our first show we’ve played all year,” he said. “I’ve been away doing some things, but we’re very happy to be here.”

In March, Peck dropped the mask and took on the role of the Emcee in “Cabaret,” which he performed on Broadway for five months. He also took a hiatus from performing his own music, barring the occasional Dalai Lama’s birthday and a stripped down show in Brooklyn. Standing alongside his five-piece backing band, he said that Sunday was the end to “one of the longest stretches we’ve ever gone without playing a show.”
