Hot new Bay Area bar shut down by city after less than a week

Upstairs, the new cafe and bar above Oakland’s popular Snail Bar, has temporarily shuttered just a few days after opening. On March 11, the city of Oakland ordered the business to cease operations due to a lack of proper permits, as first reported by the San Francisco Chronicle (the Chronicle and SFGATE are both owned by Hearst but have separate newsrooms).

The city’s Economic & Workforce Development Department issued 4935 Shattuck Ave., the address belonging to both Snail Bar and Upstairs, a “stop work” order and a cease-and-desist letter due to unpermitted construction and other activities, the city of Oakland confirmed to SFGATE in a statement.
