The San Francisco dive bar that won't give up its $1 deal
For San Francisco residents, Bay Bridge traffic engenders the kind of hate usually reserved for PG&E blackouts or the Los Angeles Dodgers. There’s no darker feeling than watching Google Maps’ bright red ETA steadily climb while stuck in a transit purgatory between the Embarcadero and Treasure Island. People have opted out of entire careers and relationships to avoid the bridge commute.
But for the team at the Hotel Utah Saloon, a historic dive bar in San Francisco’s South of Market neighborhood, Bay Bridge traffic is a godsend.
“It has always been a blessing for us,” said bartender Vince Shore, in what must be the most positive phrase ever uttered about the Bay Bridge gridlock.

Marina Nova, the general manager of the Hotel Utah Saloon, poses for a portrait at the historic bar and music venue in San Francisco’s South of Market neighborhood on Nov. 6, 2025.
The Hotel Utah Saloon offers specialty craft cocktails like the Poison Apple, as seen in San Francisco on Nov. 8, 2025.
That’s because the venue sits at the base of I-80’s Fourth Street exit, the last chance for drivers to get off the highway before the Bay Bridge.
“When there’s something going on on the Bay Bridge and it’s stopped traffic, people get off, park here and then they just chill because you can see the freeway from here,” said general manager Marina Nova.

With a history dating back to 1908, the Hotel Utah Saloon is far more than just a place to wait out the region’s unholy traffic jams.
For one thing, it’s an actual hotel. Technically, the saloon and inn are two separate businesses, but they work in concert with each other, with guests dropping by the bar to enjoy a drink as they start their San Francisco vacation. Starting at around $57 per night, rooms are as cheap as one could hope to find within city limits.

A view on Bryant Street between Fourth and Fifth streets shows a brick-paved street and streetcar tracks. San Francisco’s Hotel Utah Saloon is visible in the distance at center.
The saloon shares the inn’s commitment to affordability. Even amid skyrocketing food prices, the bar features one of the best deals in the city: $1 Wing Wednesdays. Hump day patrons have to order a drink, but after that, they can have as many dollar wings as they’d like.
Nova admitted that she hardly breaks even on the wings deal. But the promotion is so good for bringing folks in the door, and it’s become such a staple for the neighborhood, that she has no plans to shut it down. In addition to $1 Wing Wednesdays, the saloon has a Taco Tuesday deal (three tacos for $8) and a “Hard Hat Special” (a beer, a shot and a burger all for $20) to cater to SoMa’s many construction workers.
Such prices may seem untenable, but the Hotel Utah Saloon has been serving SoMa residents for well over a century. Its staff members take that responsibility........
