Ronald McDonald House: Support for families far from home
In Part 1, Rodney Kiwanians help prepare a meal for the young patients and families at London's Ronald McDonald House
There are many pillars in our midst that help support significant portions of our population, especially those who are in dire need of help during difficult and trying times.
Ronald McDonald House, situated on the same property as the Children’s Hospital at Victoria Hospital in London, has been one of these pillars for decades.
On Sunday, March 9, eight members of the Kiwanis Club of Rodney and two spouses spent the afternoon there for a humbling and enriching experience that gladdened all of our hearts while shining a light on crucial needs in our communities. Thousands of families are drawn by necessity to the medical centres and teaching hospitals that are the London Health Sciences Centre,for myriad reasons, and for widely varying lengths of time, as illnesses are treated and families are supported.
Our Kiwanis Club donated $1,000 to pay for the costs of all families staying at this Ronald McDonald House on the day and night on which we visited.
There are three levels of support and this was the highest. Ten Kiwanians — no more, no less — signed up to participate in this program. We donated and then showed up for a tour of the premises before heading to the fully equipped, and stocked industrial kitchen to prepare the evening meal.
Chef Kim welcomed us, told us that the main course would be three-cheese manicotti, with chicken fingers for those who wished. We were responsible for cooking the latter, as well as coming up with a full menu, including dessert, on our own that used the groceries in stock that day.
