ROBINET: Not in our backyard, please

The owners of York1 must be feeling pretty confident that their bid to reopen and expand the former Dresden landfill site will be approved by the province.

On its website, the Mississauga-based company has already announced the Dresden location under the category of “Coming Soon…” along with two other recycling facilities, one in Barrie and the other in Mississauga.

Those three would join nine other such facilities and transfer stations the company owns, primarily in the Toronto area.

But the developers are facing a strong backlash in Chatham-Kent and rightfully so.

There are concerns and questions aplenty surrounding the Dresden site and not much in the way of answers.

Under “more information” on the Dresden project, York1 notes that, “Ontario’s construction industry generates 14.2 million tonnes of waste annually, but only 13% of this waste is diverted from landfills.”

The company also claims that at its current rate of landfill use, the province could run out of landfill space by 2034, a situation that could be greatly rectified if construction material waste could be diverted.

To that end, York1 is proposing a Regenerative Recycling Facility (RRF) for the Dresden site,........
