I was recently taking a gander at the CBC website (well, technically I was on my phone and it was the app), and I saw a headline that immediately caught my eye:

“Apparently, ankle socks are the new sign that you’re old and millennials are done.”

This assessment is coming in from Gen Z (aged 12-27).

I was, understandably, shocked to the core, and immediately my thoughts (and prayers) turned to Number Two Son, who has been an ankle socks guy since I can remember.

And by ankle socks, I’m referring to the “barely there” piece of cloth that ostensibly covers just the bottom and sides of one’s feet, with just the tiniest snippet of cloth left to signal its presence from the top of a shoe.

Having never been a fan of this type of foot attire myself, I have to say I’m on board with Gen Z on this, but I would argue that my interpretation of the ankle sock, which includes a good inch or so above the shoe-line is actually the correct and more acceptable one.

To prove my point (to myself, if nobody else) I did a quick Google search for the sake of this column (you’re welcome!) and was met with the initial search that told me “ankle socks are out.”

An image search revealed that ankle socks refers to both “above” and “below ground” socks, so there we are.

A couple of days later I ran into the aforementioned son at........
