ROBINET: A star and a baby
At this time of year, the thoughts of Christians around the world are centred on the birth of one baby.
His parents, Mary and Joseph travelled almost 150 km from Nazareth to Bethlehem with their unborn child, only to be turned away from lodgings which were already overflowing.
Instead, their son Jesus was born in a stable, surrounded by animals; his birthplace marked by a bright star in the sky.
For over 2,000 years, Christians have revered this holy child, who grew into a man whose legacy was simple: love your neighbour as yourself.
Of course, Christianity doesn’t hold the monopoly on that message; indeed, kindness to others is at the heart of all religions, but sadly, is not in the hearts of too many people today.
As we move into this season of celebration and reflection, it is difficult not to focus on the horrors of the world and the tremendous suffering of so many of its people.
Whether it is war, famine, disease, poverty or neglect, it is always the children who suffer the most.
What a beautiful world it would be if each child who was born........
