I wrote the Chronicle’s first endorsement of Harris. No one could have guessed she’d be where she is today
Kamala Harris speaks at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on Aug. 22. No one could have foreseen her rise to the cusp of the presidency a year ago.
After covering politics in California for more than 30 years, I can’t say that a lot surprises me. But I have to admit to pausing for a bit when I heard Kamala Harris announce that she was the proud owner of a Glock.
I’ve never seen a poll on this, but I’ll bet most Glock gun owners are not officially opposed to the death penalty, a stance Harris holds that’s rarely come to light in this irascible race for the White House.
Still, that’s not even the biggest shocker of this campaign. That would come if Harris actually pulls off this presidential run, and the country elects a liberal Democrat from the Bay Area as the next commander in chief.

If you asked any political pundit a year ago if they saw Harris at the top of the ticket, they would have said you were crazy. And if........
