Waymo is beginning to map Portland streets ahead of a robotaxi launch

The Alphabet subsidiary says it won't operate driverless taxis in the city until it receives a permit, despite resistance from several city council members

Waymo has begun manually driving vehicles through Portland streets to prepare for a future robotaxi service, even as several city council members have voiced opposition to the plan.

The Alphabet $GOOGL subsidiary said it is working with state and city officials to create a regulatory path to deployment. Operating in Portland without first obtaining a permit is something Waymo has said it will not do, according to a company spokesperson.
