The best frequent flyer programs in 2026

Airports have been a mess lately, with the government shutdown creating chaos at security. More than ever, once you get through TSA, you want smooth sailing.

WalletHub set out to find the airlines with the best frequent flyer programs, comparing the largest domestic airlines’ loyalty rewards across more than 20 key metrics. It looked at everything from the airline’s destinations to its partner coverage to miles earned and what they’re worth. It also considers important but easily overlooked factors, like whether the airline has booking blackout dates, its cancellation policies, and if miles expire.

WalletHub also considered how the data compared for people who only fly a few times a year, those who fly often, and people who fly all the time.

“High gas prices and TSA staffing concerns are a major drag on people’s travel plans, but consumers do have some ways to fight back,” said WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo. “The best travel rewards credit cards can save you hundreds of dollars quite quickly, assuming you have the good credit needed to qualify, and the best frequent flyer programs can save you an average of 7% on airfare.”

5th best: JetBlue TrueBlue

TrueBlue stands out for its earnings policies. Miles never expire and the program earned strong marks for transferring miles between accounts. Frequent flyers who reach higher status tiers are well rewarded, but the airline's amount of destinations — just 115 — is its most significant limitation.

4th best: American Airlines AAdvantage

American didn't lead any individual category, but its wide network of 367 destinations — second only to United — gives it an advantage for travelers who fly across many routes. Members also don’t face many restrictions when accumulating or spending miles. Plus, American gives AAdvantage members preference when deciding whom to bump from overbooked flights, which makes a difference.

3rd best: Delta SkyMiles

While Delta didn't claim the top position in any single scoring category, WalletHub said it ranked highly across the board. Its particularly good if you’re flying all the time, rather than joining as an occasional flier. Plus, miles don't expire, which gives travelers flexibility in choosing which of the 315 destinations they want to visit.

2nd best: United MileagePlus

United's program came in second largely on the strength of its sheer reach. It achieved perfect scores in both U.S. and international destination counts, and its partner airline network is the largest of any reviewed. With 392 different places to go, it's a good choice for travelers who prioritize coverage. Miles also never expire.

Best: Alaska Atmos Rewards

Alaska's loyalty program holds the top spot for the third consecutive year. The program's membership perks are a particular strength for average and frequent flyers. Its rewards for light travelers are also among the strongest in the study, and miles never expire. At 133 destinations, its network is smaller, but the program’s overall consistency kept it first.
