Back-to-school is a transition for the whole family system.

Every stage and send-off looks different, but what they need underneath it looks a lot the same.

Supporting our children well also means looking after ourselves.

No matter what age our kids are, back-to-school season brings a shift in routines, emotions, and expectations for the whole family system. While those shifts look different at each stage, our children continue to need our support in ways that change with them. Sometimes that means holding their hand; other times, it means listening from a distance, offering perspective, or reminding them that we're here. Our role is to stay close enough that they know they belong and we're in their corner, while giving them enough space to grow, make their own choices, and find their way.

Here are a few ways to support our littles, middles, and bigs this season, along with a gentle reminder that we need to look after ourselves, too.

Supporting Our Littles

For our youngest kids, back-to-school is mostly about the unknown. They may not be able to picture the routine yet, so uncertainty can show up as big feelings over seemingly small things. Structure helps enormously here. Preparing the night before, choosing outfits, and packing bags together smooth out your mornings and build your child's own sense of capability. Small choices, like which snack to pack or what order to get ready in, give them a healthy dose of agency inside a routine that is otherwise decided for them.

Littles don't always need a long conversation about the emotional........
