Musso & Frank Grill is one of L.A.’s oldest restaurants, serving up classic cuts and hearty sides since 1919. For a more modern experience, head to Michelin-starred Kali for customizable martinis and the signature meringue gelato, or Gwen for house-made charcuterie and chef Curtis Stone’s famous duck fat potatoes. In Beverly Hills, Matū is the ultimate place for 100 percent grass-fed wagyu, while Nancy Silverton’s Chi Spacca brings a taste of Tuscany to Melrose Avenue. 5722 Melrose Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90038

Michelin-starred Kali underwent a reinvention in 2025, trading in its strict, fine-dining motto for a modern steakhouse experience. This more approachable business model has worked out in Kali’s favor, granting more guests access to their premium cuts, sidecar-style martinis and sensational potato selection. The scallop cake is a can’t-miss starter, but in classic steakhouse fashion, you should order the jumbo shrimp cocktail while sipping your customized martini complete with a jerky and pepper jack garnish. Though you’ll want to explore the sides section—specifically the mac and cheese and smoked mushrooms—there are also seven different styles of potato to pair with your steak. We recommend sharing the 32-oz porterhouse with a side of horseradish cream and splitting the hearty Potato A’ La Loaded. Do your best to save room for the signature meringue gelato for dessert.

Helmed by Australian-American chef Curtis Stone, Gwen is a one-Michelin-star steakhouse that doubles as an upscale butcher shop. Located in Hollywood on Sunset Boulevard, this swanky eatery uses Art Deco-esque chandeliers, curved plaster walls and brassy accents to create a chic space with industrial bones. Your meal kicks off with a small selection of amuse bouches, and for appetizers, don’t skip the bay scallop crudo, lobster fondue and lamb ribs. If you want a taste of the butcher shop, start with the housemade charcuterie, but definitely save room for a pasta course and order the cauliflower truffle risotto. The 12-oz filet is the crème de la crème of cuts, and remember that no visit to Gwen is complete without a side of duck fat potatoes.

As Hollywood’s oldest restaurant, Musso & Frank Grill remains one of the most iconic places for a filet and martini in Los Angeles. The old-school steakhouse has been around since 1919 and has hosted the likes of Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe and Charlie Chaplin. Some of the employees have been on staff for more than 40 years, and you’ll never get tired of chatting with the charismatic waiters sporting vibrant red blazers and black bow ties. Start your meal with an ice-cold martini served with a sidecar, before indulging in a classic spread featuring baked escargot, a crab Louie, the Musso-Frank special salad and a tender ribeye. Seafood lovers should also explore the fried oysters, sanddabs or pan-seared scallops.

Known for exclusively using grass-fed wagyu from New Zealand’s First Light Farms, this Beverly Hills staple puts a modern spin on the Japanese steakhouse. Whether you’re stopping by for the famous Philly cheesesteak at lunch or planning a special dinner in the 90210, you can expect consistency at each visit. All steaks are served “warm red” unless requested otherwise, but we recommend letting the experts take the wheel. The tender picanha is cooked over a live fire, giving it a smoky depth and complexity, but if you’d rather have something cooked on the plancha, opt for the center-cut filet. If you’re on the Westside, head to Matū Kai in Brentwood for a similar menu and equally delicious experience.

Even if you live all the way on the Westside, Sherman Oaks’ Blvd Steak is worth a trip to the Valley. The vibes are swanky and stylish, featuring a fun selection of modern art, black-paneled walls and flashy gold hardware. While you’ll be tempted to dive right into the seafood-heavy starters, kick things off with a Caprese cocktail or white Negroni. Whether you want to splurge on a raw bar tower or keep things classic with a wedge salad, stick with the center-cut filet or A5 New York strip for your main course, along with a side of shoestring fries. Though there is a second location in Calabasas, the original Blvd Steak on Ventura is best.

Carlitos Gardel Argentine Steakhouse

7963 Melrose Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90046

Since 1996, Carlitos Gardel has occupied a small, cozy space on Melrose Avenue, offering consistently warm service and premium Argentine steaks. The operation remains family-owned and operated, and the charming interior transports you back in time with acid-washed walls adorned with vintage posters and photographs. If you prefer a little fresh air, head to the spacious back patio and dine under overhead string lights while chowing down on gambas asadas and chicken empanadas for starters. Each cut is 100 percent all-natural and hormone- and antibiotic-free, with choices ranging from prime ribeye to wagyu flanken short ribs.

6610 Melrose Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90038

Chef Nancy Silverton’s Chi Spacca branches out from her legendary pasta dishes and shines a spotlight on Italian-style meats. This Tuscan-inspired steakhouse, located on Melrose right next to Osteria Mozza, serves up unique bites that you’ll be hard-pressed to find elsewhere, especially when it comes to the salumeria section of the menu. Test your boundaries with the tender veal tongue and oregano vinaigrette or opt for the shareable affettati misti and explore a variety of cured meats. When it comes to steak, the bistecca fiorentina is an obvious highlight, but the porcini-rubbed short ribs also steal the show. For a more unique main, order the beef and bone marrow pie and a side of savoy cabbage.

Located in Sherman Oaks, Alto is a South American steakhouse that specializes in open-fire cooking. The interior is rustic and cozy, but with an almost brutalist touch, featuring an open kitchen design that gives guests a prime view as the chefs work their magic. Available only once a month, Alto hosts a Pampa’s Omakase with an optional wine pairing, treating patrons to an intimate experience and exclusive facetime with the grill masters themselves. If you’re visiting for a regular dinner, don’t rush to the meat. Light appetizers like the burnt avocado salad, chimichurri prawns and hamachi crudo are all beautifully executed and offer a nice palate cleansing before the heartier dishes. Once you’re ready for your main, choose between highlights like the dry-aged short rib, slow-roasted ribeye and signature surf and turf showcasing skirt steak and lobster.

11208 Culver Blvd, Culver City, CA 90230

Backed by renowned fine dining chef Josiah Citrin and partner Hans Röckenwagner, Dear John’s pays homage to Hollywood’s past with a revitalized rendition of the original restaurant from 1962. The menu is about as classic as it gets—think starters like shrimp cocktail, oysters Rockefeller, pigs in a blanket and a traditional Caesar salad for two. Cuts range from a New York strip and filet to a ribeye and prime sirloin, but Dear John’s also offers other entrées like lobster thermidor, sand dabs and a timeless spaghetti and clams.

425 Rose Ave, Venice, CA 90291

American Beauty is a quintessential neighborhood steakhouse in Venice. Though you’ll find a horseshoe-shaped bar and cozy candlelit tables inside, the majority of the action takes place on the massive patio. Whether you want to be tucked behind a wooden booth or around a charcoal fire pit, this is the perfect place to enjoy a distant ocean breeze while sipping on the signature bay leaf-infused martini or a chilled syrah. Before diving into the dry-aged steaks, enjoy apps like the frisee Caesar salad, bluefin tuna tartare and grilled prawns. The prime porterhouse is great for sharing, but you can never go wrong with the 7-oz Creekstone filet mignon with a grilled lobster tail on the side.
