Unregulated e-bikes endanger everyone

Yesterday was the second anniversary of my e-bike accident.

It was a lovely Tuesday, May 21, 2024, a day after my 75th birthday, when I was returning on No. 6 train to my Upper East Side apartment. I exited the 77th St. station and walked east. When I got to Third Ave., I waited for the light to turn green and looked south toward oncoming traffic. Seeing none, I stepped off the curb. A moment later, my life was permanently altered. A speeding e-bike, illegally driving against the traffic, smashed into me.

I crumpled to the street, in pain and shock. I looked up and caught a glimpse of the rider who looked down at me, possibly to check if I was alive and then sped off. He appeared to be a delivery driver dressed in all black with a helmet, hood and mask. Despite NYPD’s efforts, he was never identified.
