Everyone knows New York has a housing crisis. But I’ve learned that the word “crisis” means something very different depending on what you’ve lived through and the struggles that you’re facing right now.

I used to live with a man who abused me in every way — emotionally, psychologically, and physically. He did the same to my children. He used me to get what he wanted, and it was intolerable. My children and I are survivors of domestic violence.

Thankfully, we escaped. With the help of the federal Emergency Housing Voucher (EHV) program, I found a decent home where my children and I are free from abuse. The program connected us to New Destiny, which helped me with the apartment search and the paperwork — for survivors like me, it was a lifesaver. My children finally know what it’s like to have a home free from violence.

Now, the voucher that gave us security is the reason we can’t sleep.........
