Alex Catt, who took over the role just six months ago, says he made the decision following a "significant increase" in work commitments.

But his decision comes after the group faced fierce criticism from Labour and internal disquiet in recent days over its handling of Liam Calvert's readmission to the group.

The Wensum ward councillor became embroiled in a scandal earlier this year after a tenant claimed that for two years, he had failed to resolve complaints about mould and damp in a house he rented out.
