Valerie Smith has lived in her Dowson Road home for 66 years but was certain the explosive was safe as her husband who had been in the army had told her it was.

It was only when a gardener visited the 88-year-old's property on Tuesday that he discovered the bomb and called the police at 1.17pm.

Dowson Road and Wheeler Road in Mile Cross were closed for three hours while the bomb squad dealt with the explosive.
