Health bosses have revealed laboratories at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital (N&N), where biopsy samples are sent from hospitals, GPs and dentists across the county, had a backlog of more than 8,000 samples earlier this year.

That in turn led to delays in getting results back to clinicians, and bosses have acknowledged the impact it has had on patient care.

Histopathology analysis is a vital tool in determining what care patients should get, such as the most appropriate chemotherapy courses for cancer patients.
