The Treasury plans to raise the tax on betting on the sport from 15pc to 21pc, brining it up to the same rate applied to online casinos and slots.

As part the industry-wide Axe the Racing Tax campaign, four fixtures scheduled for September 10 at Lingfield Park, Carlisle, Uttoxeter and Kempton Park are being cancelled by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA).

It will be the first time that the sport has voluntarily refused to race in its modern history.........
