This election season, the Trump administration has stepped up its shady use of government appointees for partisan purposes. The immediate aim is to stave off the loss of the GOP majority in House elections to be held in three and a half months.

The most glaring recent example of a Cabinet member crossing the wavy line from governance to political fixing is Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s contacts with Libertarian Party candidates in Iowa. Both could siphon votes from GOP congressional contenders.

Kennedy visited the state in May, ostensibly to boost President Donald Trump's health agenda. On June 11 the secretary had a conversation with Rick Stewart, the Libertarian candidate in Iowa's 2nd Congressional District. Stewart recorded it and Kennedy indicated he wanted the third-party hopeful to drop out.
