New Delhi: Reigning champions Argentina slumped to a 1-0 loss against Ecuador while five-time winners Brazil went down by a similar margin at Bolivia to end the FIFA World Cup qualifiers with their worst campaign ever.

Argentina’s Nicolas Otamendi and Ecuador’s Caicedo were sent off in an intense game.

In the first half, Ecuador created most of the chances, forcing Argentina keeper Emiliano Martinez to be at his sharpest early on.

Argentina’s start turned from bad to worse as Otamendi pushed Enner Valencia from behind to get his marching orders. The defender will miss Argentina’s first match at the World Cup next year.
