Allow flexibility in substitutes, new-ball rule in Tests, say former England captains
New Delhi: To make Tests more appealing, two former England captains have suggested that the International Cricket Council should allow greater flexibility in use of the new-ball and substitutions.
Alastair Cook has pitched for teams to be allowed to take the new ball at any stage within 160 overs, in place of the existing 80-over stipulation for usage of the fresh ball, which he reckons would bring in more tactical depth.
“A new rule I would add would be, how about, in 160 overs, you can take the new ball whenever you want? You have got two new balls for those 160 overs, and you can take that second ball whenever you want.
“You could take one after 30 overs if you wanted to,” he told while speaking at a podcast named Stick to Cricket.
