Will the swing voters once again prove to be the kingmakers in Delhi?
Delhi is all set to elect its new government. About 1.56 crore voters will elect 70 lawmakers in the single phase polling that would begin Wednesday morning. In a high-stakes election where accusations and counter-accusations flew high in the weeks-long acerbic campaign, the ruling AAP and BJP has emerged as the main contender giving no quarter to the rival. The Congress, despite a fairly decent campaign by the party’s standard, is expected to be a distant third. However, it is likely to damage AAP’s prospects in several seats.
Apart from the AAP, Congress and BJP, the Delhi election has about a dozen parties in action including the BSP (70), NCP (30), AIMIM (12), CPI (6), CPM (2), CPI-ML (2), JD-U (1), LJP-R (1). The Delhi election also witnessed re-ignition of rivalry between the allies. Within the INDIA-bloc, it seems the Congress and AAP have failed to learn any lessons from the Haryana debacle and are again in a slugfest with each other in Delhi. This will benefit BJP. However, things are a bit rough in NDA as well. The Ajit Pawar-led NCP is contesting on 30 seats against the BJP despite both the parties being part of the Mahayuti government in Maharashtra.
