Uttarakhand implements UCC: How it impacts citizens, will other states follow this model
In a historic step, the hill state of Uttarakhand is going to become the first state in the country to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) after independence. This momentous occasion comes a day ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Uttarakhand. The Pushkar Singh Dhami government will formally announce the implementation of UCC in the state at around 12:30 pm.
Officials have confirmed that this law will be applicable in the entire state and will also be effective for the citizens of Uttarakhand living outside the state. The main objectives of UCC is to implement equal laws for all citizens and to eliminate discrimination on the basis of religion.
UCC means that a uniform law will be applicable to all citizens in the state for marriage, divorce, adoption, division of property and other civil matters. Its purpose is to establish a uniform system in place of different personal laws for different religions and communities. Under this, it will be mandatory for couples living in marriage and live-in relationships to get registered.
It may be noted that during the 2022 Uttarakhand Assembly elections, the BJP had promised to implement the UCC in the state. After this, when CM Pushkar Singh Dhami took over the reins of power, the UCC proposal was approved in the very first cabinet meeting and permission was given to constitute an expert committee to prepare its draft.
Once the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is implemented in Uttarakhand many things will change in the state. People following different religions in the state will now have equal laws for marriage, divorce, alimony and inheritance.
The Uttarakhand Uniform Civil Code Act, 2024, will establish a streamlined framework for the creation and cancellation of wills and complement documents.
According to the state........
