There are at least 2,054 startups in the northeast region now, the Central government informed the Rajya Sabha on Thursday. The North East startup initiative is being led by Assam, with 1,487 startups, Manipur having 179, and Tripura having 141 startups so far, Minister of State in the DoNER Ministry, Dr Sukanta Majumdar, informed in a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha.

Additionally, the North Eastern Development Finance Corporation Limited, under the administrative control of the Ministry of Development of the North Eastern Region, is supporting first-generation entrepreneurs for the development of start-ups in the region through the North Eastern Enterprises Development Scheme (NEEDS), Majumdar informed.

It is worth noting that the Modi government launched the Startup India initiative on January 16, 2016, intending to create a strong ecosystem to promote innovation and startups and encourage investments in the country’s startup sector. However, the country’s startup ecosystem has been dominated by cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Delhi, etc., but amid these cities, a budding startup ecosystem has found a strong foothold in the beautiful landscape of the North East. The minister’s reply shows that the startup environment is booming in the North-Eastern regions, slowly and steadily, as the state governments are encouraging and stimulating entrepreneurship and creating a space for entrepreneurs to ideate and innovate.
