Voting for Delhi Assembly elections will be held on February 5 and all the major political parties be it BJP, AAP or Congress are claiming victory for themselves and have left no stone unturned to woo the voters, especially the women voters of Delhi. This time, out of the three major political parties, BJP and Aam Aadmi Party have fielded 9 women candidates each while Congress has fielded 7 women candidates.

Of the 699 candidates contesting the Delhi Assembly elections, 96 are women. All three parties have fielded more women candidates this time than in the 2020 assembly polls and this time the highest number of women candidates are in the fray in the last 4 decades.

It may be noted that in 1993, there were only 58 women in the list of 1,316 candidates, which was only 4 per cent and only three of them were able to win the election. By 1998 the participation of women decreased a bit and 57 women contested. But, the success rate improved and increased from five per cent to 16, which is a record to date. Then in 2003, the number of women candidates increased to 78, but only 9 per cent of the candidates were able to win the election.

In Delhi, AAP has continuously increased the number of women candidates and the winning percentage of women candidates in the party has been quite good. According to the data, in 2013, 6 women contested the elections and three won. In 2015 also, all six women won. In 2020, the party fielded 9 women, out of which 8 won. Looking at the winning percentage, this year the party has again fielded 9.
