Bengaluru: With the summer season driving up the demand for refreshing fruits, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has launched an extensive probe into the alleged use of chemical dyes in watermelons. The investigation follows alarming reports that some vendors inject artificial colorants to enhance the fruit’s red hue, raising serious health concerns across Karnataka.
The FSSAI has initiated a large-scale monitoring campaign across the state, collecting samples from various markets to test for unauthorised additives. Officials warn that synthetic dyes often used to make watermelons appear more appealing could pose significant health risks, including toxicity and long-term medical complications.
