Fuel crisis forces ban on vehicle purchase by Pakistan govt; only one item at weddings

The West Asia crisis has created a deepening energy crisis in Pakistan. To tide over the situation, the government has implemented strict austerity measures to curb expenditure and fuel consumption. Purchase of new vehicles is being banned and fuel allocations for government vehicles have been halved. The government spending will be trimmed 5% a month. There is also a three-month ban on foreign travel for federal government employees and officials.

Kolkata: Pakistan’s fuel crisis is deeply impacting its public life. The government has clamped down on curbing petrol, diesel consumption and controling public expenditure. New orders issued by the government include a total ban on purchasing government vehicles, a 50% cut in fuel allocations for government cars and a decision to allow serving only one dish at weddings. Also, markets have to close down by 9 PM. As is clear, the scope of the restrictions goes beyond government expenditure and into commercial activities and social/family functions. The measures come agiast the backdrop of continuing conflict in West Asia and crude oil supply disruptions in the Red Sea.
