New Delhi: There is a good chance you have never given it much thought. You put on a bra, adjust the straps, check the fit, and somewhere between the two cups sits a tiny bow, ribbon or flower. It is too small to provide support, too decorative to be essential and, in most cases, seemingly too insignificant to serve any practical purpose. Yet the detail has remained a surprisingly persistent feature of lingerie.

So, is there a hidden historical reason for it, or is it simply fashion?

The small ornament is usually placed on the centre front of the bra, technically part of the bridge or gore—the section connecting the cups. The Underpinnings Museum, which documents the history and construction of lingerie, defines a bow as a type of knot commonly used as decoration in underwear.

On a modern bra, therefore, the bow generally has no structural or supportive function. It is an embellishment, much like lace, embroidery or decorative stitching.
