US pulls away but Europe comes close, can EU support Ukraine on its own?
New Delhi: In the three years that it has been since the start of the Russia-Ukraine war, a lot has changed. To mark the event, Ukraine hosted European leaders on Monday. Conspicuous by their absence were US officials, who after the re-election of Donald Trump as the President have slowly moved towards Russia. The US still has voiced support for bringing the war to a close, but it currently looks to be prioritising Russian interests while doing so.
Ukraine on Monday, marking three years of its ongoing war with Russia, held a summit that saw European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Council President Antonio Costa and the leaders of Canada, Denmark, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Finland, Norway, Spain and Sweden participating. The summit can be seen as a statement of intent for major leaders in Europe coming in support of Ukraine, even if the US did not do so.
Apart from those who were physically present, leaders of Albania, Britain, Croatia, Czech Republic, Germany, Japan, Moldova, the Netherlands, Poland, Switzerland and Turkey spoke by video link. “In this fight for survival, it is not only the destiny of Ukraine that is at stake. It’s Europe’s destiny,” von der Leyen wrote on X.
The leaders from Europe converged to call for more support for Ukraine in its never-ending war with Russia. Some even called for increasing defence spending, something which has become all the more important as the US currently seems to be moving away from Ukraine.
