As Zelensky-Trump verbal spat worsens, will it cost Ukraine US support, and the war?
New Delhi: Since the re-election of US President Donald Trump, pre-existing political equations of the US, around the world have seen a sudden shift. Considering the non-traditional manner in which Trump is known to conduct his politics, this should not come as a surprise to many. Be it his threats of imposing tariffs or mass deportation of illegal immigrants, policy actions by Trump are sending shockwaves around the world and forcing many countries to reassess their relations with the US, some for the better and others for the worse. The latest in this is Ukraine, which is currently engaged in a long-standing war with Russia, where US financial support and military aid have been key to its military efforts.
The current, sharp turn in relations between Ukraine and Russia come after US-Russia talks were held in Saudi Arabia earlier this week from which Kyiv was excluded. Reacting to this on Wednesday, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said, “We are seeing a lot of disinformation and it’s coming from Russia. With all due respect to President Donald Trump as a leader… he is living in this disinformation space.”
These comments did not go down well with Trump, as he sharply reacted against them, by calling out Zelensky as a “dictator”. Speaking at a Saudi-backed investment meeting in Florida, Trump said the only thing Zelensky “was really good at was playing Joe Biden like a fiddle”. “Think of it, a modestly successful comedian, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, talked the United States of America into spending $350 Billion Dollars, to go into a War that couldn’t be won, that never had to start, but a War that he, without the U.S. and........
