Reflected plasma waves could drive heating of coronal holes on Sun

New Delhi: Researchers from the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) operated by the US Department of Energy have demonstrated that reflected plasma waves could be driving the heating of coronal holes, low-density regions on the surface of the Sun with magnetic field lines extending into interplanetary space. High speed streams of plasma originate from the coronal holes, that influence the space weather across the entire Solar System, and can cause geomagnetic disturbances at the Earth. The waves on the surface of the Sun are caused by wiggling magnetic fields and were first predicted by Swedish Nobel Laureate........
