Earth struck by severe geomagnetic storm
New Delhi: A coronal mass ejection (CME) observed from the Sun on 9 October, associated with an X1.8 solar flare aimed straight at the Earth, has struck the Earth, resulting in a geomagnetic storm. The CME consists of hot gas or plasma from the Sun violently hurled through interplanetary space. This plasma is magnetised. The material from the atmosphere of the Sun carries with it a portion of the magnetic field of the Sun, causing geomagnetic storms when it encounters the geomagnetic field of the Earth. The disturbances can last for days, or even weeks.
