New Delhi: Despite five centuries and a brilliant fifer from Jasprit Bumrah, Shubman Gill-led India suffered a shock five-wicket defeat against England in the first Test at Headingley in Leeds on Tuesday to go 1-0 down in the five-match Test series. India failed to defend 371 runs as England rode on a magnificent 149-run knock from Ben Duckett and half-centuries from Zak Crawley and Joe Root to chase down the target comfortably.

India were in a strong position in the Test match after centuries from KL Rahul (137) and Rishabh Pant (118) helped them set a strong 371-run target for England in their second innings. However, the hosts pulled off a remarkable victory, making light work of the tricky target to record the third successful 350-plus run chase in the 4th innings of a Test match at Headingley.

Duckett and his opening partner Zak Crawley got England off to a solid start in the 371-run chase with a terrific opening stand of 188 runs, which set the tone for the hosts on Day 5. While Duckett slammed 149 off 170 balls, laced with 21 fours and a solitary six, Crawley played perfect support with a valuable 65. The duo made Indian bowlers toil hard for their wickets in the first two sessions on Day 5.

Prasidh Krishna broke the 188-run stand in the 43rd over and sent back Ollie Pope cheaply in quick succession to ignite hope for India. However, the visitors had left it too late as Root’s unbeaten 53 and a 44 not out from young keeper batter Jamie Smith took England over the line. India have now lost 7 of the 9 Tests played under head coach Gautam Gambhir.

India were sublime in patches and had their moments........
