Opinion | How PM Modi Is Making Paryavaran Protection A People’s Movement

In a world grappling with visible effects of climate change on the one hand and an irresponsible, immature climate change denial on the other, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has transformed India into a beacon of hope, weaving environmental stewardship into our Viksit Bharat 2047 roadmap.

PM Modi’s environmental passion took root in Gujarat when he was serving as the CM – where he established India’s first climate change department as early as in 2009. This was a pioneering step when global climate discourse was nascent and denial was the norm. His Jyotigram Yojana brought 24×7 electricity to villages, slashing diesel use and laying the foundation for renewables. The Charanka Solar Park, Asia’s largest at the time, made Gujarat a solar powerhouse. PM Modi’s book, Convenient Action: Gujarat’s Response to Climate Change (2011), detailed innovations like canal-top solar panels and sustainable urban planning. This commitment which has only got more traction and strength with CM Modi becoming PM Modi, completely aligns with the RSS’s Panch Parivartan program which lists Paryavaran among its five pillars for societal transformation, emphasizing sustainable living and community-driven conservation. PM Modi can be credited for linking nature with culture and creating a roadmap for a sustainable future.

India’s climate achievements under Climate Warrior PM Modi are staggering. At COP26 (2021), he unveiled the Panchamrit pledge: 500 GW of non-fossil energy by 2030, 50% renewable energy, a one-billion-tonne carbon emissions cut, a 45% reduction in carbon intensity from 2005 levels and net-zero by 2070. By June 2025, India hit its 50% non-fossil fuel target. 242.78 GW out of 484.82 GW and that too five years early. By 2023, emission intensity dropped........
