Opinion | Who Are The Thousands That Depend On Meghan Sussex?
It is being regarded as the Nadaaniyan of the celebrity lifestyle show genre: so unspeakably bad that just about everyone has to watch it, if only to gauge how awful it could possibly be. That, of course, should be good news for producers as eyeballs are eyeballs, no matter what the brain processes the content to be. So, With Love, Meghan could have been well worth all the negative publicity before and after the series dropped on OTT last week. Sadly, it was not.
Barely a week since its release, the show has slipped out of the top 10 rankings, pushed down by a distinct lack of love for Meghan from viewers. It also seems Meghan solo is not that much of a draw: although Netflix has announced a second season, With Love, Meghan drew just a quarter of the viewers that Harry & Meghan got in 2022 in the same number of days—just over 500,000 households compared to 2.1 million respectively. And it is unlikely to improve.
Because podcasters and influencers have obligingly watched all eight episodes of “Meghan Sussex" (nee Markle) doing her thing—buying bushels of flowers, picking berries, arranging crudites on platters, writing labels, hugging old friends and new and being Montecito Majesty in shades of ecru—so that Netflix would not benefit from ‘hate-watching’. And the tactic seems to have paid off as her show has not been able to maintain momentum, but the podcasters have!
In fact, watching all the hours of critical commentary feeding off Meghan’s show has become an entertaining alternative—and alternative entertainment—with a bewildering number of authorities on the couple emerging around the world. There are now thousands of........
