Opinion | The Power To Prevent: India’s Cervical Cancer Turning Point

Cervical cancer is one of India’s most preventable killers, yet it still claims over 75,000 women every year. Today, India has the tools to change this: an affordable HPV vaccine, nationwide digital health platforms, and post-Covid diagnostic capacity. The challenge now is not scientific, but a clear implementation push powered by political will, vaccinating every eligible girl, screening every eligible woman with accurate testing, and ensuring timely treatment to patients in need. If India can build this engine, cervical cancer elimination can shift from ambition to an achievable public-health success.

Rolling Out the Vaccine: From Production to Precision Delivery

India now has access to affordable HPV vaccines—‘Cervavac’ from the Serum Institute, complemented by supply from other manufacturers, makes universal HPV vaccination financially within reach. The real challenge is operational, getting doses to every 9-14-year-old girl, especially in rural and high-burden districts.

Digital infrastructure makes a vital difference. The U-WIN portal can track demand, stocks, and coverage in real time. ‘Automated supply-chain triggers’, or simple, rule-based alerts generated by the system when key stock or coverage thresholds are crossed, can move doses to districts that need them most, cutting wastage.
