From Gaza to Michigan: How Foreign Policy Shaped El-Sayed’s Victory

El-Sayed’s victory exposes the cracks in America’s pro-Israel political consensus, showing that grassroots voters can now challenge establishment money and influence. Who is Abdul El-Sayed?

El-Syed is a Muslim, progressive former public health official of Wayne County who ran for the governorship in 2018. In 2014, El-Sayed joined the faculty of Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health as an assistant professor of the epidemiology department. El-Sayed was also famous for hosting podcasts such as America Dissected. In one interview, El-Sayed has claimed that his decision not to become a doctor was made because of the experience of treating a patient while studying medicine, and he realized that he had to solve the problems that affected people systematically rather than individually. In the course of his political campaigns, El-Sayed condensed his policy to three main statements: “Money out of politics, money in your pocket, and Medicare for All.” He is viewed as one of the leading opponents of Israel, a supporter of Palestinians, and a critic of foreign interventions.

El-Sayed’s victory has clarified one thing: political capital cannot always compensate for a credibility deficit. El-Sayed ran against Rep.
