Donald Trump just killed Alberta's pipeline dreams

Even before the 51st state threats, before the tariffs, before the ICE raids and now the flagrantly illegal attack on Venezuela, Donald Trump was the least popular American president in Canadian history by quite some distance. But if there was a relative bastion of support for America's 45th and 47th president, it was in Alberta — and especially its oil and gas industry. 

In Trump, they thought they saw someone who would cut through the regulatory “red tape,” put an end to climate policies and pressure their own government to follow suit. What they’re getting is someone who wants to massively increase oil production, reduce prices and replace Canadian exports with ones America can more directly control. For all of the incessant whining about how Justin Trudeau wanted to kill Alberta’s oil and gas industry, it’s Trump that might actually end up doing it. 

If America’s half-baked invasion of Venezuela somehow succeeds and American oil companies are able to resuscitate the country’s rusted-over energy infrastructure, that could mean millions of barrels of heavy oil returning to the market to compete directly with Canada’s exports. There are also the massive offshore deposits in nearby Guyana, ones that already produce more barrels per day than Venezuela — and which the Maduro regime has repeatedly........
