AI is fuelling a new wave of child exploitation. Tech giants cannot be allowed to look away, writes MP Gregor Poynton

Children engage with technology instinctively and naturally.

Whether it’s learning through tablets, chatting with friends in games, or exploring the endless rabbit holes of YouTube, young people’s lives are increasingly online. And while we rightly celebrate the opportunities this brings, we must also face up to the dangers that lurk in the shadows of the internet — and do so with urgency.

The Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) has today published its Annual Data and Insights Report, and the findings are nothing short of harrowing. In 2024 alone, they confirmed a record-breaking 291,273 reports of child sexual abuse imagery. To put that into perspective: every 108 seconds, IWF analysts confirmed a report of a child being sexually abused.
