There's no playbook for being an uncle as a child-free man - I'm terrified
All being well, I’m going to be an uncle for the first time soon. I’m jazzed. But, I’ve got to be honest, I haven’t got a clue what I’m meant to be doing.
If you’re becoming a dad, everyone has got advice for you. Walk into any bookshop and you’ll see racks and racks of dad lit. There are more terabytes of dad podcasts than anyone could ever listen to, let alone a man setting off a third boil wash of the afternoon.
The expectant fathers I know are never more than 15 minutes away from a meaningful you’re-gonna-be-a-great-dad-mate huddle. For those unfamiliar, this is when men feel honour-bound to grab their mate’s shoulder, lock eyes and – no, seriously, mate, just being serious for a second – very sincerely tell the new dad pretty much everything they’ve just heard their three other mates say.
There are, however, no antenatal classes for prospective uncles. As a child-free man in my mid-thirties, I’m completely at a loss. My wife and I aren’t planning on........
