Watching my peers being bought homes while I work hard is difficult to swallow
Recently, I was at a birthday party and surfing cloud nine. Someone I’d met there had asked me if I’d just graduated from university. A huge smile spread across my face as I informed them that I was in fact 31, and my graduation was nearly a decade ago.
But my happiness was rather short-lived when, later in the evening, another person assumed that because I am “older” I must, of course, “own property”. I wasn’t entirely sure what they meant by “property”. A flat? A house? Multiple homes?
I simply laughed and told them that I wasn’t “there yet”, and I was once again left with a niggling sense of shame that something was missing.
I’m currently renting a property with my fiance and I have been an active player in the London rental market for many years. Every month I spend around a third of my salary on rent alone – excluding bills. While I am privileged enough to be saving a small amount of my salary each month, I can’t help but feel it is categorically unfair that some people are able to access family........© iNews
