Women Are Taking on More Managerial Roles. Here’s Why You May Be Missing Out on Top Talent

Women make up a little over half of the world’s population, but some data on U.S. workplaces tell another story

A survey by analytics and surveying company Pew Research shows that women represent a growing share of the number of U.S. managerial and professional workers. That’s good news, from an equality perspective, and represents a success after decades of campaigning for women’s rights in the workplace. Pew’s data show that across all the different workplace types it surveyed, women now hold 49 percent of the roles, closing in on parity with men. But some more detailed data show there’s still a long way to go on the road to equality.

For example, only 46 percent of people identified as “managers” in data were women, at least for Pew’s 2023 results. That represents a significant rise from the meager 29 percent results for 1980 (when the “yuppie” trend was having a cultural moment), but it does mean that on average more men are managers.
