The Big-Boss Trend Is Squeezing Flexible Work Perks. Here’s Why You Should Care
Dialing back work-life balance benefits is on the agenda for many American company leaders. It’s not going down well with many employees.

The Covid pandemic ushered in sweeping changes to the way billions of people worked, and many of those more flexible working paradigms have lasted after Covid has waned. Now a report says that the U.S. is entering its big-boss era, with company leaders imposing much stricter in-office regimes, pulling back on work-life balance perks, and telling disgruntled employees that they should just leave. Conscious of an economic climate full of mass layoffs and the threat of ever-smarter AI tools that are taking on many workplace functions, some employees feel the squeeze acutely.
A pair of chief executives typify this trend, according to news site Axios: CEO of telecom giant AT&T John Stankey and Scott Wu, CEO of the small, San Francisco-based AI outfit Cognition.
