Gen-Z May Not Be ‘Consciously Unbossing’ After All
The reported trend of younger workers avoiding management roles may be greatly exaggerated.

Of all the news stories that put Gen-Z workers in the spotlight, from oversharing to opting out of the 9-to-5 grind to their urge to stare blankly, perhaps the most interesting trend from a business leadership point of view was the idea that Gen-Z was “consciously unbossing.” That means the youngest cohort in today’s workforce was portrayed as avoiding taking on management positions to keep their work lives low-stress.
From a long-term point of view, this trend really could reshape the workforce, impacting which type of worker ends up taking on management tasks. But new data suggests that Gen-Z may not be unbossing after all, and they may be joining company managerial ranks at a rate that matches their older cohorts.
