Why Some Employees Are Paying for Their Own AI Tools to Use at Work
A new survey finds about 40 percent of employees using AI for work are doing so without managers knowing about it.

The artificial intelligence revolution is not only underway, but evolving so rapidly that many businesses struggle to keep pace with it. One measure of the technology’s surge is the large majority of U.S. employees who say they’ve already adopted or tested it to automate and improve certain aspects of their work — often despite their company having no formal policy on its introduction and use. As a result, a new study says nearly half of the workers using AI are doing so without the knowledge or supervision of their managers, often paying for access to apps out of their own pockets.
According to a recent survey by digital payroll services company Gusto, the gap between the rate of workers adopting AI and company oversight of their tech-boosted activity is considerable. Its poll of 1,000 U.S. workers found around 80 percent of respondents reported having used the tech on the job, with 36 percent considering it........
