I don’t know if this is much consolation, but it would seem that Donald Trump’s craven greed does end up mitigating his violent, dictatorial character and his inclination toward a neo-fascist ideology. We know very little about the “deal” on Greenland Trump supposedly reached with his buddy Mark Rutte – but it’s certainly true that the happy-go-lucky NATO Secretary General had no mandate or authority to negotiate any part of the future status of Greenland as a territory.
Copenhagen and the main European capitals were quick to point this out. But if we want to guess what Donald’s great deal might look like, it could be something like this: Europe will pay billions to fund NATO’s defense of the ice-covered island, while the United States will get the areas of greatest economic interest and with the most natural resources, through some form of private-law setup that ends up giving Washington full ownership (not a mere state concession) while leaving the simulacrum of national sovereignty untouched.
Everyone is happy in this scenario: the U.S. extractive industry, the MAGA base who are against geopolitical adventures, and Europe too – spared from a trade war and reaffirmed in its “sovereign” pride.
