Exclusive: Lucy Powell Planning To Stand For Deputy Labour Leadership Days After Being Sacked By Starmer

Lucy Powell was sacked by the PM last Friday.

Lucy Powell is planning to run to be deputy leader of the Labour Party just days after being sacked from the cabinet by Keir Starmer.

HuffPost UK understands the Manchester Central MP could announce she is a candidate as early as today – although she has yet to finally make up her mind.

It comes after education secretary Bridget Phillipson became the first minister to throw her hat into the ring.

Dame Emily Thornberry also announced that she wants the job, joining left-winger Bell Ribeiro-Addy, who was the first to declare on Monday night.

Powell is known to be “furious” that she was sacked as Commons leader in Starmer’s cabinet reshuffle last Friday.

Supporters have been urging her to go for the deputy leader’s post, which is vacant following Angela Rayner’s dramatic resignation from the government.

Under Labour’s rules, candidates have until 5pm on Thursday to get the 80 nominations they need to get on the ballot paper.
