Trump's America Just Gave Putin Another Free Pass On The World Stage
President Donald Trump's officials refused to condemn Russia for its 2008 invasion of Georgia.
Donald Trump’s administration has refused to condemn Russia over its war in Georgia for the first time in 17 years.
Ever since Russian forces invaded Georgia in 2008 – the first conflict in Europe of the 21st century – the international community has come together to denounce Moscow’s actions every year on the anniversary of the war.
Russia continues to have a military presence in two Georgian regions, Abkhazia and South Ossetia, to this day, claiming they are “independent”.
On Thursday, the US notably chose not to sign a joint statement from the UN Security Council members in support of Georgia’s territorial integrity.
