Liz Truss has jumped on Elon Musk’s latest criticisms of Labour by sharing a clip of a cabinet minister appearing to say the government values the rights of asylum seekers more than the interests of local Brits.

Neither the former prime minister nor the richest man in the world shared the full interview, though, which shows Bridget Phillipson explaining the wider picture.

It comes as anti-asylum protests have erupted across the country in recent weeks.

The government even found itself in court last week, fighting to keep an asylum hotel in Epping open.

While the Home Office won its appeal, it has raised further questions about the government’s promise to end all asylum hotels by the end of this parliament.

So on Sunday, presenter Trevor Phillips questioned education secretary Phillipson over how the government won that case, in a video which soon went viral on X.

He said: “Your lawyers, under your guidance, have said in terms, that the rights of the asylum seekers are more important than the rights of local people in Epping Forest.

“Would you at least acknowledge that that is what they will hear? It’s up to you. Ministers can say we agree with that or we don’t agree with that.
