The Epstein Files and Donald Trump: when conspiracy theories come back to bite

The saga of Donald Trump and the Jeffrey Epstein files is a parable for the 21st century. It stands as a warning to those who would dare use conspiracy theories to win power.

Dance with the devil, and he’ll one day demand payment: that’s the lesson.

Here’s what we can say without fear of straying into the realms of conspiracy about Epstein – a symbol for the cursed nexus between power and paedophilia: he was a sex offender. He’s dead. Nobody mourns.

However, the MAGA movement created clouds of conspiracy around who may or may not have been involved in his crimes.

Trump’s enemies – people like Bill Clinton – were accused of being on Epstein’s "client list". Claims were made that Epstein, who died in jail, was murdered as part of a cover-up.

This was always a risky strategy for MAGA, given the pictures of Trump with Epstein.

One video shows Trump laughing and partying with Epstein, whilst whispering in the sex offender’s ear. They seem very friendly and intimate. It is, as the saying goes, not a good look.

However, regardless of this material, Trump promised to declassify Epstein’s "little black book" while on the campaign trail.

Now, though, the Trump administration – in the shape of the Justice Department and the FBI – claims there is no little black book, and that Epstein died by his own hand.

It’s all rather embarrassing for Trump and his avatars. Indeed, some of the MAGA crowd have been so revved up by all the years of talk about Epstein that they’re now turning their ire, their disappointment and their conspiracies towards the President and his team.
